LION
& LAMB HELPS PARENTS If we want safe schools in the future, we have to teach anger coping skills to young children today Each time students open fire on their classmates, communities around the country are uniting in grief asking "What can we do to prevent such violence from ever happening again?" The Lion & Lamb Project, a national grassroots initiative, is mobilizing parents to stop the merchandising of glorified violence to children -and to teach children that violence is NOT acceptable behavior under any circumstances. Violence is a learned behavior, and children are learning it at younger and younger ages. Children who are told that violence is "bad" but then receive a toy gun -- or watch a steady diet of violent television and movies -- are getting a very confused message. In fact, children ages eight and under cannot separate fact from fiction -- that is why they believe in the tooth fairy and monsters under the bed. Lion & Lamb helps parents teach their own values to their children. Conflict resolution and anger management are some of the topics covered in Lion & Lamb workshops, which are being offered throughout the country. Lion & Lamb has also released a Parent Action Kit, which highlights the documented effects of violent "entertainment" on children's behavior, and provides parents with action steps they can take at home and in their communities to reduce the amount of violent messages reaching their children. |
