April 24,2001 MEDIA ADVISORY FTC Report on Marketing
Violent Entertainment to Children: WASHINGTON, DC – While a Federal Trade Commission follow-up report finds
two of three entertainment industry groups have made “some” progress, in
fact, none of the entertainment industries have made a comprehensive commitment
to stop the marketing of violence to children, according to one parent watchdog
group. Neither the movie, video game nor music industries have
adopted the recommendations made in the FTC’s September report, which found
all three industries were “pervasively and aggressively” marketing adult
violent entertainment to children, according to Daphne White, executive director
of The Lion & Lamb Project. “Short of written policies spelling out how the
industries plan to stop marketing violence to children over the long term and in
all media, industry promises are not worth the paper they are written on,”
White says. “The FTC says some progress has been made – but clearly
all three industries still have a long way to go before they win back parents’
trust.” Daphne White, an outspoken activist against violent
entertainment targeted to children, is available for interviews in reaction to
this report. White, who has testified before Congress, founded the Lion
& Lamb Project in 1995.
